about

The idea of an ‘alternate album’ to the soundtrack of the excellent miniseries on the Chernobyl catastrophe made for HBO and SKY was born in 2020 during the process of re-listening to and selecting different tracks I had produced at the time.
Originally conceived for a dark ambient project with a strong cinematic imprint, on comparative listening they presented many spontaneous similarities with the soundtrack of the series and also a similar methodological approach at the compositional level, such as the use of concrete sounds of industrial and ambient origin that I usually combine with timbres generated electronically with my vintage analogue synthesisers, to which I then added original sound materials of the time found on the net, such as dialogues between the first intervention personnel after the explosion or extracts from the magnetic tapes recorded by Valerij Legasov before his sui- cide.
It therefore seemed natural to me to propose these tracks as a sort of acoustic sequel to the soundtrack of the original series, from which they differ structurally and timbrically while maintaining the aforementioned simi- larities and, above all, the oppressive and disturbing atmospheres suggested by the images.
The main title “Die Uranmaschine” (The Uranium Machine) refers to the first experiments aimed at the deve- lopment of a nuclear weapon by German scientists in the 1930s, while the titles of the individual tracks, in addition to following the chronology of events in 1986, are in part reinterpreted and adapted quotations from Ray Bradbury’s ‘Martian Chronicles’, a novel in which the author describes the rarefied atmosphere of the red planet, its colonisation and abandonment, a setting that bears many similarities to the current scenario of the region affected by the nuclear fallout following the reactor explosion.
